ATONEMENT is a film adaptation of Ian McEwan's wartime novel about the effects on a family and a couple's love after a girl accuses a man of a crime he didn't commit. The film was passed '15' for very strong language, bloody injuries and moderate sex.

A '15' was also required for brief shots of soldiers' bloody injuries and moderate sex, including a very brief scene suggesting an adult is glimpsed having sex with a teenager. At '15', the BBFC's Guidelines state that 'violence may be strong but not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury', 'sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail' and 'sexual violence must be discreet and brief'.
