THE ANGELS' SHARE is a contemporary drama set in Scotland about a young offender who sees an opportunity to change his life through the daring theft of a rare vintage whisky. The film was classified '15' for very strong language and strong violence.
The film contains multiple uses of strong language throughout and seven clear uses of very strong language. Eight other uses of very strong language were dubbed out in order to achieve the company's requested '15' classification. The BBFC's Guidelines at '15' state 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, 'fuck'). The strongest terms (for example, 'cunt') may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable'. A single aggressive use of very strong language occurs when the central character is confronted by members of a gang in a pool hall. The use occurs amidst angry shouting as he attempts to stand up for himself. Other aggressive uses of very strong language that were originally present have been dubbed out. The other instances of non aggressive very strong language tend to be used in a throwaway manner and often occur during remarks between friends.
Strong violence occurs during a scene in which the central character is beaten up by a group of men and during a 'flashback' sequence in which he reflects on his own brutal assault of a man that resulted in his imprisonment. The violence in these sequences has a strong tone but does not focus on the details of punches, kicks and headbutts being landed, or the bloody injury that results. The Guidelines at '15' state 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable'. The scenes in question have a strong narrative justification as they show those aspects of the central character's life that he is attempting to turn his back on.
Cuts information
Company chose to reduce the number of uses of very strong language in order to obtain a '15' classification. Cuts made in accordance with BBFC Guidelines and policy. An uncut '18' classification was available.
