AMOUR - LOVE is a subtitled French language drama about an elderly man and his wife who live a rich and fulfilling retirement until she suffers a stroke. As her health and ability to communicate decline, their relationship and love is tested to the limit. It is rated 12A for one use of strong language and distressing scenes.
There is a single use of strong language which occurs when a young care nurse is sacked for her lack of respect towards the woman she's supposed to be caring for. She lashes out at the man who has sacked her with some aggression, saying "F*** you, you old prick".
There are several distressing scenes related to the deteriorating health of the elderly woman, who is left paralysed and barely able to speak following several strokes. Confined to bed she spends hours calling out in distress but is unable to communicate with her husband. Living with and witnessing her almost constant distress places a terrible burden on her husband, particularly as his wife expresses a wish not to go on living. When she starts to refuse to eat of drink in an effort to starve herself to death, he slaps her out of frustration explaining that he cannot kill her. However, after calming her down, the husband suddenly removes his wife's pillow and places it over her face in order to suffocate her. We see the woman's legs moving as she briefly struggles. There is no focus on the woman's suffering and the film makes it clear that his action is one of a loving and devoted husband attempting to put an end to his wife's misery, in line with her wishes.
The film also contains some natural breast nudity when a woman is bathed by a nurse, sight of an elderly man smoking a cigarette, and sight of man gently catching a pigeon which has been trapped inside his apartment. There is no evidence that the bird was harmed or treated in a cruel fashion.
