AFRICAN CATS is a natural history documentary which follows several families of animals, including lions and cheetahs, as the cubs are weaned and learn to hunt and survive on their own. The film was classified 'U' and contains documentary footage of animals hunting and fighting. A previous version was classified 'U', with narration by Samuel L Jackson. However, this version is narrated by Patrick Stewart.

The BBFC's Guidelines at 'U' state 'While problematic themes may be present, their treatment must be sensitive and appropriate for young children'. In this film, there are several sequences showing animals fighting or hunting. The scenes of hunting are not shown in detail and tend to focus on the chase, cutting away as soon as the prey is caught. This means there is very little sight of any blood or animals in pain. The hunting is shown as a natural part of life and as a positive event for the animals we focus on as it ensures their cubs will be fed. There is a reassuring tone throughout and the work is unlikely to cause undue anxiety to young children.
