THE ACT OF KILLING is a documentary about the suppression of Communist insurgents in Indonesia in the mid-1960s. It is classified 15 for graphic verbal descriptions of torture and killings and strong sex references.
Many of the leaders of the private army that carried out the killings are still alive and they are interviewed by the filmmaker about their actions. They are also invited to act out their memories using their favourite films, which leads to some scenes of re-enactments based on famous gangster movies. The verbal descriptions of the way victims were tortured and executed are graphic and detailed. The perpetrators speak about these acts with some relish and are also quite candid about acts of rape carried out before a mass killing in a rural village. There are some references to targeting young girls for rape.
Sex references include an explicit description of a young woman performing a sex act at a rally of the army leaders.
The film also contains infrequent use of strong language ('f**k') and references to soft drugs.
No-one younger than 15 may see a 15 rated film in the cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video or DVD.
