THIS IS 40 is a comedy drama spin-off from the 2007 film KNOCKED UP. It revisits the lives of Debbie and Pete as they approach their respective fortieth birthdays. It is rated 15 for two uses of very strong language, strong language, strong sex and drug references.
The two uses of very strong language occur during an argument between a father and the mother of another child. He tells her that he will shove her iPhone and her iPad up her iC***. Although said in anger, the delivery is not aggressive. Shortly after, the woman repeats what was said to her to the principal of the high school attended by their children. The film contains over ninety uses of strong language ('f***'), including a single use of 'motherf*****'. Mild and moderate language includes the terms 'asshole', 'bitches', 'cock', 'crap', 'dick' and 'God'.
There are also scenes of strong sex. In one scene a female character asks her husband if he wants a 'blow job' before, with her back to the camera, she is seen kneeling between his legs implying oral sex. Other sequences include a couple having sex in a shower cubicle, with partial nudity and thrusting largely obscured by water and steam, and a couple being caught on CCTV having sex in a shop, but without nudity and seen only from a distance. The film also contains verbal references to sex and scenes of crude humour, for example, several references to oral sex and sight of a man attempting to photograph his anus with a mobile phone for the purpose of medical investigation. In the latter example the man's anus is not seen.
THIS IS 40 also contains a scene in which a couple eat a marijuana cookie, together with verbal drug references. But the film does not promote or encourage drug misuse. A comic road rage incident features a male character being punched in the face and stomach. It is portrayed without any blood or focus on injury.
No-one younger than 15 may see a 15 rated film in the cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video or DVD.
