New Chairman for BBFC Council of Management

The new Chairman of the BBFC’s Council of Management began his career behind a film camera and has spent over forty years in television both with the BBC and Independent Television. Ewart Needham joined the BBFC’s Council of Management in 1997 and takes over from Brian Smith.

During his time at the BBC Ewart Needham worked on many well known programmes including

Z Cars, Maigret, Nationwide and Songs of Praise and many for the BBC Natural History Unit with David Attenborough, including The World About Us. He moved to Thames Television as Head of Film in 1979, setting up the Teddington Studios as a stand alone facilities company in 1992. In 1997 he became Chairman of Teddington Studios Ltd before setting up his own company, Daubney Needham Associates Ltd in 2001 where he acts as a consultant providing professional strategic services to media companies.

Commenting on his appointment Ewart Needham said:

“I am very pleased to be taking over as Chairman of the BBFC’s Council of Management. The Council is not directly involved in the day to day film and video classification activities of the BBFC, but is responsible for overseeing the financial management of the Board on behalf of the film industry which established the BBFC in 1912. The film and video industries are thriving and I am delighted to say that the BBFC has met the challenge of providing the industry with a fast and efficient one stop classification service.

“One of my first duties will be to lead the Council in appointing a new President to take over from Andreas Whittam Smith. Andreas and Robin Duval, the BBFC’s Director, have been behind the move towards an open and accountable BBFC. I believe my own role will be to ensure that at the same time the BBFC remains an efficient and soundly run company.”
