BBFC launches its own PSHE resources for primary schools, accredited by the PSHE Association

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) today launches primary school PSHE education teaching resources in a bid to help equip pupils with the tools to make the best choices about what to watch, when and where.

BBFC launches its own PSHE resources for primary schools, accredited by the PSHE Association

 

Building on its already extensive work with young people, the BBFC’s Education team has teamed up with the PSHE Association to produce the free lesson plans, "Lets' Watch a Film! Making choices about what to watch" aimed at Key Stage 2 children.

 

BBFC Head of Education Lucy Brett said: "We are excited to be partnering with the PSHE Association, especially in light of current government focus on strengthening the quality and status of PSHE in all schools.  We hope that teachers see this as a vital support in guiding their pupils to make informed choices on what they watch, as well as providing pupils with the tools to walk away from the lessons with greater knowledge of BBFC ratings and an understanding of how what we watch affects us and the people around us.”

The lesson plans and accompanying Teacher Guidance focus on key PSHE skills such as decision making, understanding relationships, and looking for help and guidance in useful places.

The BBFC’s Education team is a significant part of BBFC's public outreach, with a core objective of helping children and young people choose well when selecting viewing material online, at home and in the cinema.

Traditionally a large part of the BBFC's education work was with older teenagers and those studying media, or hoping to become the next generation of media producers; this resource marks a move towards engaging with younger children at an age where they are starting to choose their own viewing independently, especially at home.

 

Brett added: "As visual media continues to find its place in an increasingly accessible online world, it's important that children are given opportunities - within a safe and nurturing learning environment - to gain the knowledge, understanding, and skills to make informed viewing choices.

“I'm positive that our PSHE lessons will help promote this – while providing the bedrock for teachers to explore wider ideas, including building resilience in an increasingly online world, considering suitability of material for different age groups and navigating relationships with friends and family when making decisions about what entertainment to watch.”

 The classroom resources will support teachers and pupils in finding relevant and accurate information to underpin their viewing behaviour, indicating useful places, such as the BBFC's children's website www.cbbfc.co.uk which carries age ratings and BBFCinsight for films rated U, PG, 12A.

Let's Watch a Film! Making choices about what to watch includes a teacher's guide, two lesson plans and additional supporting resources.

Lesson one introduces the BBFC to students with the aim of ensuring they can readily identify the classification symbols and understand the significance of each one. Pupils will discuss different themes within visual content and what they mean for different age ranges.

Lesson two builds on the first, while tackling growing up and the concept of negotiating which content to view. Through a range of activities, pupils will gain the skills to navigate viewing content with either family or friends. As well as understanding that different people want to watch a range of different content, the goal is for pupils to come away galvanised to make their own choices and aware of how they can find the advice they need.

With the ever-changing landscape of media, and multiple ways in which to view content readily available to a growing number of children, the BBFC is confident that this resource can form a key part in ensuring that children are prepared to make informed choices about what they watch – and how.

PSHE Association Subject Specialist Sally Martin says: “With growing technological developments surrounding film and video content, young people are increasingly required to manage their own viewing habits. These important new PSHE education lessons from the BBFC support pupils to critically select what they watch and learn ways to handle situations where they may feel under pressure to view something they are unsure about. These lessons will help to develop pupils’ risk-assessment, decision-making and assertiveness skills as part of a planned PSHE curriculum.”

About the BBFC

The BBFC is an independent, private, not-for-profit company which classifies films, video on all physical formats (DVD and Blu-ray Disc for example) and certain video games, advertisements and trailers. The BBFC also works with a number of on demand services to provide trusted age ratings for video content available for download and streaming online.
